There is a saying that, one lifetime is not enough to explore the great country, India. Amazing diversity in topography, from snow covered mountains to Himalayas to the great Indo-gangetic Plain, Deserts of Western India, to the backwaters of Kerala.  Now add to this the centuries of cultural meting pot, giving amazing amalgamations of food, architecture, mixed-culture, performing arts. What you have is a country that is a treat to all your senses.

There are many parts of India that is exciting and enchanting…but not well publicized or explored. Hence it is far away from the itinerary of any common International and domestic tourist. One of such state is Odisha. A scenic state in eastern India, with Bay of Bengal lining one side, while dense forest and mountains on the other.

Situated just on the outskirts of Bhubaneswar, this 9th century Goddess Kali temple is a circular shaped structure that houses 56 granite idols with Kali at the center mandap that houses another 8 idols.

Mukteswara Temple

Heritage Site

The 10th-century Mukteshvara Shiva Temple reflects Kalinga style of architecture. It is constructed in a lower basement amidst a group of temples. The arch or torana, with beautifully carved pillars, is the most important feature of the Temple. It shows influence of Buddhist architecture. The walls of the Mukteshwar temple is decorated with stunning dancing sculptures that are so typical of Odisha temples.

Jiranga

Buddhist Monument
This 70 feet, five stories monastery built on 10 acres, is the largest in South Asia. This was inaugurated by Dalai Lama in January 2010. This spell-bounding Monastery is part of the Padmasambhava Mahavihara and houses 800 monks.  There is a breathtaking waterfall just few kilometers away from the Monastery.

Ancient Civilization Ruins

This pre Mauryan fort City flourished between 3rd century BC and 4th century AD.  This place is little known, with a fort that was build much before the Mauryan period. Through research it is found out that the civilisation was flourishing. From the remains, it is believed that the fort had 19 columns in a designated area, which maybe a part of a structure. The cluster of pillars that is seen now, were part of the queens palace.

Religious Site

A Krishna Temple that serves delicious kheer (Gopinath khira) called ‘Amruta Keli’, made up of condensed milk, sugar, cream, and raisins. It is believed that the kheer pots are personally tasted by the Lord. The idols of Lord Gopinatha, Govinda & Madana Mohana are made in black stone. In 1938, the Govinda and Madan Mohan idols were brought from Vrindavan. Folklore says that Sita worshiped this deity in Chitrakuta.

The Belghar Sanctuary Wooden Guesthouse

Man-Made Wonders

This is the beautiful all wood bungalow owned by the forest department, approximately 115 kms from Daringbadi. The beautiful structure is part of the The Belghar Sanctuary for animals. This area is inhabited by the Dogria Khond or Nakate tribe. Spend a night here right inside the jungle. It can be booked through the DFO – Baliguda Range.
